The anti-secession law, China recently proposed, not only severely undermines the sovereignty of Taiwan as an independent state, infringes the value and dignity of 23 millions Taiwanese people’s freedom and human rights, but also significantly threatens our national interest and safety.
In 1949, after years of civil war in mainland China, the Communist Party of China (CPC) occupied the mainland and established the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The original government [the Republic of China (ROC), founded and led by The Kuomintang (KMT) since 1912] was forced to move across the Taiwan Strait to the island of Taiwan and maintained its jurisdiction over the island. In the early 1950’s, the international community simultaneously recognized the ROC and the PRC as two separate and independent states, which should mark the end of the civil war. However, the communist regime wrongfully continued their military ambitions against Taiwan and covered up their aggression as a national affair, part of a self-proclaimed unfinished civil war, which has now lasted over half a century. The anti-secession law is the communist China’s newest attempt at military aggression against Taiwan with legislature rationale. Its concept is defined by Beijing as "Taiwan is an inalienable part of China." The law legalizes military action toward democratic Taiwan, reinforces preconditioned negotiations about the future of Taiwan, and greatly suppresses 23 million Taiwanese people’s freedom and their right of choice.
The anti-secession law also causes changes of the status quo cross the Taiwan Strait while bringing instability to Asia and threatening U.S. security. Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and Philippines are not only important economic partners, but America's most reliable allies in Asia. They not only prevent direct military encounters between the United States and the communist China, but also provide the U.S. with a Pacific defense buffer against the world’s largest dictatorship state, which has a long history of hostile toward our idealism of freedom and democracy. Among these allies, Taiwan locates at the mid section of the link and strategically controls sea lanes of communication between the South China Sea and northern Asia, which are the crucial routes for petroleum from the Middle East to Russia, Japan, and South Korea. Taiwan is the key to stability in the region. The anti-secession law encourages the military wing of communist China to adopt an aggressive policy toward Taiwan, which puts stability of the region at great risk and jeopardizes U.S. national interest and safety.
The equal value and dignity of every human right are proclaimed by the American Declaration of Independence and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Hence our great nation leads the international society in defending human rights and providing hope and equal opportunity of freedom to all nations. Let us clearly express our opposition to China's despicable scheme and leave the aggressors and tyrants no chance to tilt the global stability or deny millions of people’s basic freedom and human rights. |
