I have a question about driving with foreign country license plate.
I am an international student and my car has a Canadian plate and
I do not have a Califonia driver's license.
My quesiton is: Is it mandatory for an international student to acquire California license plate? Or is it okay for me to continue driving with Canadian plate for the next 2 years? Thanks in advance!
Technically, you have to get California plates if you are planning to stay for more then 20 days in California. CHP has a link on their website where people can report out of state licensed cars. I'm not sure how strict they are enforcing this. You probably won't get pulled over for out of state plates. Just hope your neighbors don't report you.
The main reason to get a CA plate is nothing but the insurance.
Also, having a local plate also has a "blend in" effect. You don't want to be the primary target of the police to meet their quota, do you?
Out-of-State Vehicles:
How long do I have to register a vehicle from another state or country?
Nonresident vehicle owners who move to California must register their out-of-state vehicles in California within 20 days of the date they accept employment or establish residency in California.
If a resident of California acquires a vehicle from another state or country, fees become due the date the vehicle enters California and must be paid within 20 days to avoid late penalties.
You may obtain information, which explains California's registration requirements by calling DMV at 1-800-777-0133, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (operators are available between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday) or go to your local DMV office.
I had this experience. You don't need to get either CA license plate or CA driver license if Canada is still you permanent home and as long as you have somebody in Canada you renew you registration for you every year.
However, you need to get CA license if you are move to the states permanently or plan to sell your vechicle here in the later time because the car dealer needs the vechicle register in CA before they can resell it.
You also need to talk to your insurance about the coverage while you are out of country.
My cousin used canada license plate and driver license in US for over 5 years. He never have any problem. In fact, you don't need to worry about ticket because they cannot take off any points from your record since you are holding a foreign country driver license.
